My four- year -old has just admitted to pushing one or more coins into the optical drive of my desk top. Is it worth using a flat knife on it to ease them out or should I remove the drive and then take it apart to get at the coins? Help!
It’s better to remove and open the drive. These SlimLine drives are rather fragile. Pictures of a hairclip lost in a MacBook drive here. Also the work of the owners little daughter. Where would be the Mac repair business without the little ones? ;-)
You should be fine just using this guide to remove the optical drive, after which you can simply pick out the coins with tweezers.
Depending on how far in they are, you might be able to get them out with something hook-shaped. This might also help: Optical Drive Disc Removal Technique, or Foreign Object Removal
