I wanted to rescue my data from my older MacBook air Early 2015. I purchased this item https://vimeo.com/44343143?embedded=true… , the universal drive adapter from iFixit as it says it should be compatible with my SSD but I could not figure out how to connect the adapter to the SSD. Did I purchase the wrong adapter?

No thats the wrong adapter, its designed for 2.5” & 3.5” drives (HDD or SSD) Your MacBook Air uses a much smaller SSD we call it a blade drive
