I’ve been having issues with charging my laptop, an Acer E5-721. I had issues with the charger that came with it working only sporadically. The cord that led into the plug was frayed and I assumed that was the issue. I bought a third-party charger, but it has never worked much better. It fits loosely into the port and also works sporadically if at all. I pulled the back cover off the laptop last night. I observed a missing screw that helped hold the port in place and assume this is part of the problem, but while I have it apart I was considering replacing the port. I still have the original charger and find it wiggles a bit when inserted (though as I bought the device used I have considered it might not be the right charger). I can’t figure out how to replace the port. When I do a search on Google, I can’t even find one specific port for it. One kind appears to just plug in, another has a wire that must fit somewhere on the motherboard. When I look at mine I don’t know how it comes out.
Don’t know if these pics help. The digital camera I used has never worked particularly well. Does the motherboard have to be removed to remove the port, or can the port be pulled out with the motherboard in place?
Hey Brian! Looks like the charging port is soldered to the motherboard. To replace it you’ll have to desolder the old port and then solder on a new one. Check out some of our soldering guides to get started. How to Solder and Desolder ConnectionsHow to Use a Desoldering Pump As for sourcing a replacement charging port. It will not have any cables attached to it and will mount directly to the board. I would search for a replacement jack using the model number of your laptop and compare the online results to the one on the board. Hope this helps!
