For first time in my life I bought a iMac pc, so i did have any reference at all. It was always very slow to load programs, open safari, search on outlook or finder…. etc. (sometimes 10 to 20 sec per action) even open pictures at photos. I upgraded the RAM from 8 to 32, it better but still slow. May it be a problem with my HDD or motherboard?? I was thinking to chance the HDD to a SDD, but I’m not sure it the genesis of my problem? How can I check if my PC is performing ok? Thanks.
Most likely your HDD is holding you back! Apple didn’t install the fastest drives in their systems and to add to it they are based on SATA III (6.0 Gb/s)! While SATA III is still quite fast, the drive apple put in is not able to even leverage this I/O channel to the fullest. In addition, patter drives over time become fragmented as they are used (data churn) So I often find defragmenting the drive brings back a lot of performance lost. Drive Genius But what is the best thing going forward if I want still more speed? While replacing the HDD for a SSD will get you to the point of using the full SATA I/O channel it is still not able to get the most of what your system offers! iMac Intel 27" (Late 2012-2019) SSD Upgrade Kit Apple did put in a still faster drive connection PCIe/NVMe so you could install a blade SSD, set it up as the boot drive and have it hold your apps gaining super performance of its I/O channel and still hang onto your HDD for your data drive. I have a late 2015 imac 17.1 27 inch. I upgraded to the Aura Pro X2 SSD and my computer works great. It states that it does not function with the 17.1 Imac but mine definitely does and works great. I am wondering if there has been an update or something that has allowed this. According to OWC, this should not be able to work.
